In the Provincial Legislature today, Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea advised Islanders that the week of December 1 to 7 is National Safe Driving Week.

Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea noted that this year’s National Safe Driving Week coincides with the start of the busy holiday season, a time when the need for safe driving practices takes on a heightened importance. The theme for this year’s National Safe Driving Week is “Be a Responsible Host.”

“I want to remind all Islanders that the holiday season is a time of celebration. By following a few simple steps, we can make sure that this time of celebration isn’t marred by needless tragedy,” observed Shea.

Among the steps that party goers and hosts can use to increase safety are:

• Serving alcohol in a responsible manner and offering non-alcoholic beverage choices;

• Always arranging for designated drivers if needed through friends, family, coworkers, taxi or transit where available;

• Reminding all your guests about the importance of wearing their seat belt and driving responsibly.

Shea also noted that, in addition to ongoing public education activities, staff from the Department of Transportation and Public Works will be working with local law enforcement this holiday season to help ensure that safe and responsible driving practices are followed on Island roads.
