This week is National Nursing Week and, in East Prince, Registered Nurses and Licensed Nursing Assistants are participating in various recognition events and activities to celebrate and bring recognition to the contribution nursing makes to the health field.
Currently in East Prince, approximately 300 RN s and LNA s work at the region's many service sites. Whether they work in acute care, long-term care, seniors, mental health, public health or in many other roles, the contribution RN s and LNA s provide to healthcare teams is vital and significant.
Brenda Maynard, Director of Acute Care for East Prince Health, notes that, "Nurses in the region can boast of many accomplishments over the past year. One such accomplishment is the success of the IV infusion clinic at Prince County Hospital. The clinic has grown in popularity for many clients requiring intravenous therapy. Back in January, the clinic averaged 6 clients per day and that number has risen to an average of 20 per day."
Basically, the IV infusion therapy clinic offers a convenient scheduled clinic environment for people traditionally needing to visit the Emergency Department or be admitted into the hospital for such therapy. The clinic offers many benefits to the public and care providers. Those who require IV therapy are able to return home after a brief hospital visit and more space is then available in the Emergency Room and inpatient bed areas for other treatments.
A new RN Mentorship program has also been developed in the region for new nursing graduates. The program links nurses with many years experience to assist those being orientated to new employment. The mentorship program started this week and runs from May until July.
