Municipal Elections

Municipal elections will be held in Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall on Monday, November 1, 2010, resulting in new mayors and councillors being elected. To be eligible to vote in the municipal elections, a person must be (a) 18 years of age or over by Election Day (November 1), (b) a Canadian citizen, and (c) ordinarily resident in the municipality for a period of six months preceding the date of the election.

Elections P.E.I., an independent, nonpartisan office of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, has overseen and run the past municipal elections held in 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006. The Province of Prince Edward Island has offered the services of Elections P.E.I. to oversee and run these four municipal elections within the four major municipalities of Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall. Mr. Lowell Croken has been appointed as Chief Electoral Officer.

As stated in the election bylaws, there will be a door-to-door confirmation of electors within the municipalities of Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall beginning on September 28, 2010, running for six days.

Two confirmation officers will call on each household seeking the name, address, date of birth and phone number of each eligible elector within each household. Once the confirmation form is completed, a yellow copy will be left at each household. Confirmed electors are asked to please keep their yellow copy of the Confirmation Form as this contains the dates, times and locations of the three advance polls as well as the ordinary poll on election day. Please note that the wards and polling divisions within Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford and Cornwall have not changed since the 2006 municipal elections. Check the bottom section of your yellow Confirmation Form for your exact ward and polling information.

Should it happen that an eligible elector is missed during the confirmation process, he or she will still be able to get his or her name on the Official List of Electors by registering with the Ward Returning Officer of his or her municipal ward. Four days have been set aside for the registration of any eligible elector who might have been missed during the confirmation process. Registration will begin on Friday, October 8, 2010, and will end on Tuesday, October 12, 2010.

A complete list of the Ward Returning Officers will be published in the daily newspapers. This list will include the name, address and telephone number of each Ward Returning Officer as well as the ward(s) each Ward Returning Officer represents.
