October 27, 2015 Transportation, Infrastructure and EnergyThe Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy is asking Islanders to drive with care during the potato harvest season and to watch for farm vehicles traveling Island highways. “The potato harvest is a time of heavy traffic on our rural highways. Drivers should remember that some farm equipment is bigger and slower than the usual flow of cars and trucks. There can also be muddy sections of the highway in areas where harvesting equipment is leaving a field,” said Minister Paula Biggar. “Drivers should slow down in areas being harvested and be sure to share the road safely with our farm workers.”The potato industry has reported that the 2015 harvest is running later this year than the typical harvest, meaning that some vehicles may be traveling in the evening and twilight hours.“This is a very busy time of year for a vital Prince Edward Island industry,” said the minister. “Our farmers appreciate a little extra attention that can keep everyone safe while traveling rural roads.”For general information on road conditions call 5-1-1 or visit www.511.gov.pe.ca.Media Contact: Ron Ryder
