Congratulations to the envirothon students at Montague Regional High School students who are members of the winning team for this year’s Provincial Forest Envirothon team, said Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell.
“The Provincial Forest Envirothon is a unique education program supported by the provincial government that focuses on natural resource sciences such as forestry, soils and land use, water and aquatic ecosystems, and wildlife habitats,” said Minister Mitchell. “I want to congratulate all Island high school students who worked hard to educate themselves on these important aspects of our environment. I wish the students from MRHS the best of luck as they represent our province on the international stage this summer.”
Members of the winning team are Tara Llewellyn, Chloe Jardine, Bethany MacKenzie, Emily Brothers and Amanda Gormley. They will represent Prince Edward Island at the 2016 North American Envirothon in Peterborough, Ontario in July.
Seven teams from five Island high schools competed at the 2016 event which included training days, study programs and a two-day competition at Camp Seggie. This year’s theme Envirothon theme was ‘Invasive Species and their Impacts on our Environment’.
“Science programs such as Envirothon provide students with unique insights into the issues and challenges facing resource managers and the people who depend upon healthy and productive ecosystems,” said Minister Mitchell. “Through their studies, these young people have demonstrated science literacy, personal knowledge and leadership, and dedication to the environmental health of our Island.”
Minister Mitchell also recognized the efforts of the team’s teacher/adviser Matthew Killeen as he helped his students prepare for the event.
