Residents of Montague and Southern Kings County are now benefitting from improved safety at the intersection of the Wood Islands Road, Valleyfield Road and Douses Road thanks to the completion of a new roundabout, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.
"Changes had to be made to the intersection because of the increased traffic destined for the new Montague high school on Valleyfield Road,” said Minister MacKinley. “The construction of a roundabout at that location reduces the possibility of severe collisions, and it improves the efficiency of the intersection by eliminating a two-way stop.”
The $1.1-million project began in early September. The new roundabout opened to traffic late Thursday evening after a two-week shutdown and detour to allow for placement of concrete and asphalt.
Several other major construction projects are also nearing completion throughout the province. They include:
- Charlottetown Perimeter Highway, at the Oak Drive Overpass: Crews continue work to complete the installation of concrete barrier walls and the median deck at the Oak Drive overpass. Lane reductions will be required to complete this work. Crews expect to be finished during the first week of December depending on weather.
- Charlottetown Perimeter Highway, St Peters Road to Southgate Avenue: Paving will get underway on this section later this week depending on weather. Lane closures are expected but two-way traffic will be maintained through the site. Work is expected to be complete late this week depending on weather.
- Charlottetown Perimeter Highway, Park Street to Grafton Street: Paving is underway at this location and is expected to wrap up by Wednesday, November 10, depending on weather.
- Stratford Road, Glen Stewart Drive to Keppoch Road: Crews continue work on sidewalks, landscaping and final paving on Stratford road. Some stop-and-go traffic is expected over the next few days. Project is expected to be complete by Friday November 26 depending on weather.
- Mill Road, Route 2 Detour, St Peters Bridge Project: Maintenance crews continue work on the Mill Road, a section of the Route 2 detour around St Peters Bridge. This work will continue periodically while the detour is in place.
