Minister Vessey Recognizes Tourism Month in PEI

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
With June designated as Tourism month in Prince Edward Island, it is a prime opportunity for every Islander to recognize how this industry enhances the quality of life for Islanders, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Vessey.

“The Province invested $16.9 million in tourism and $42.9 million was returned to provincial government as general revenue,” said Minister Vessey. “This revenue allows Government to invest money into initiatives such as post secondary institutions, seniors drug care assistance and health care. It is one of our primary industries that shows the strongest potential for growth.”

The tourism sector creates jobs and economic spinoffs that benefit all Islanders. A major contributor to our economy, the tourism industry employs close to 7,500 people and represents 7 percent of the provincial Gross Domestic Product. Tourism month enhances the profile of tourism as a key economic generator for Prince Edward Island.

“The Department of Tourism and Culture is encouraging Islanders to become Prince Edward Island ambassadors,” said Minister Vessey. “Share your testimonials and videos, and let everyone know that Prince Edward Island is a great vacation destination. Islanders really enjoy our attractions, sites and activities. During Tourism month they are asked to invite residents and visitors to share their favorite thing to do in Prince Edward Island.”
