A broad range of topics will be on the table next week when Prince Edward Island’s Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley travels to Ottawa to meet with Federal Minister Lawrence Cannon and his provincial and territorial counterparts.
“It will be a great opportunity to discuss emerging and ongoing issues that affect provincial transportation mandates right across the country,” says Minister MacKinley. “For example, there will be important discussions on Canada’s international gateways and how Canadian Border Security is used at local airports, and discussions on the National Highway System.”
Minister MacKinley has met with fellow Atlantic ministers and the Federal Minister in the past, but this meeting marks the first occasion all of Canada’s Transport Ministers and the Federal Minister have met since Minister MacKinley took over the Transportation and Public Works portfolio on the Island.
“These meetings are very important from both a policy, and from a public safety standpoint,” says Minister MacKinley. “These meetings will give our government an opportunity to make sure Prince Edward Island has input on important national issues.”
Other topics for discussion at the Ottawa meetings include vehicle weights and dimensions, fuel consumption standards for motor vehicles, and cell phone use while driving.
