Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea today advised the public that the Annual IWMC Compost Appreciation Day will be held this Saturday, May 13.

Compost Appreciation Day is an annual event by Island Waste Management Corporation where Islanders can pick up some compost free of charge for their personal use. Compost will be available to Islanders for their use with a limit of one half ton truckload or one cubic yard per customer. Compost Appreciation Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“With sunny days on the horizon, this is a great opportunity for Islanders to put some of the compost that they have helped produce to good use around their homes and gardens. I encourage Islanders to take advantage of Compost Appreciation Day this weekend,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea who made the announcement in the Provincial Legislature.

A number of locations across Prince Edward Island will have compost available to be picked up by the public, including the IWMC Waste Watch Drop Off Centers in Brockton, Murray River, New London, Charlottetown and Dingwells Mills as well as the East Prince Waste Management in Wellington, the compost plant in Brookfield and the old Charlottetown Airport on Brackley Point Road. Each of these sites will have loading equipment ready to assist the public in loading their vehicles with compost or Islanders can bring their own buckets, containers and bags.

Shea advised that although the compost will be available to the public free of charge, staff from IWMC will be accepting voluntary donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Last year over 1000 tonnes of compost was distributed and nearly $1500 in donations collected for the Children’s Wish Foundation as part of Compost Appreciation Day.
