Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, September 20-26, serves to remind men and women about the threat of prostate cancer, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.
“Prostate cancer affects many Islanders,” said Minister Bertram. “Through the proclamation of Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, we hope to generate increased awareness about the disease and urge Islanders to actively participate in prevention and early detection.”
In 2010, it is estimated that 120 Island men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Island men. Although the survival rate for those diagnosed with prostate cancer continues to rise, this disease remains a risk factor to the health and well-being Islanders.
“By increasing awareness about the causes and signs of prostate cancer, we can save more lives, improve the lives of those suffering from this cancer, and reduce its incidence throughout our One Island Community,” said Minister Bertram.
For those seeking more information on Prostate Cancer or support throughout their personal journey, the PEI Prostate Cancer Support Group meets the second Thursday of each month at the Murphy’s Centre at 200 Richmond Street, Charlottetown, room 106.
