Minister Proclaims Humane Society Month

* Agriculture and Forestry [to Oct 2003]
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Mitch Murphy has proclaimed August as Humane Society Month. The proclamation is aimed at recognizing the important work of the Prince Edward Island Humane Society in promoting and providing humane treatment for animals and its role in enforcing animal protection legislation.

"The Humane Society provides an outstanding service in the care and protection of animals and in raising awareness of the importance of their humane treatment," said Mr. Murphy. "The Humane Society has also been highly effective in administering animal protection legislation under contract with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry and several other municipalities and agencies."

Mr. Murphy noted that last year, more than 3000 animals were admitted to the animal shelter by the Humane Society, and it continues to expand its services. During a recent meeting with the Humane Society, he said he is willing to consider legislative changes which would extend protection to companion animals.

Elizabeth Murphy, Director of Development with the Prince Edward Island Humane Society, announced the official opening of the new Dog Exercise and Education Park will take place on August 4 as part of Humane Society Month. The park, located on the Humane Society's property on the Sherwood Road in Charlottetown, will provide dog owners the opportunity to exercise their dogs without a leash.

"Year round, the Prince Edward Island Humane Society celebrates the humane treatment of animals and reflects and fosters this belief by actively participating in the education of our community," said Ms. Murphy. "Having August proclaimed Humane Society Month and coordinating various activities throughout the month like the grand opening of the Dog Exercise and Education Park, it is our hope that the public embraces our cause to improve the quality of life for animals throughout the community, the province and beyond."
