Minister Encourages Islanders to "Go Fishin"

Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment Chester Gillan is encouraging Islanders to mark National Fishing Week at their favourite fishing hole.

The week of July 6-14 is designated National Fishing Week in Canada. It is aimed at encouraging Canadians of all ages to discover the fun of sport fishing.

"A day of fishing is an ideal summer outing. It's simple, inexpensive and fun for the whole family," said Minister Gillan. "No matter what part of the province you are in, there are excellent angling opportunities nearby. I would like to see more Islanders take advantage of these opportunities and make fishing a part of their outdoor activities this summer."

The Minister also encouraged visitors to Prince Edward Island to include fishing in their holiday plans. Whether it's brook trout fishing in streams or on ponds, Atlantic salmon fishing on larger rivers, or a deep sea outing for cod or mackerel, Prince Edward Island boasts some of the best recreational fishing in some of the most beautiful natural areas in the region, he added.

Minister Gillan said Prince Edward Island sees several benefits from the recreational fishery.

"Anglers play an important role in ensuring fish populations and fish habitat remain healthy - not only through licence purchases which provide funding for habitat improvement projects, but also through volunteer work. According to the 2000 Recreational Fishing Survey, 850 Island anglers spent 12,980 volunteer days on tasks such as stream enhancement in 2000. That is an incredible contribution," he said.

As well, Minister Gillan added, angling contributes to healthy lifestyles and results in significant economic spinoffs in Prince Edward Island with $3.6 million in spending directly attributable to the recreational fishery.

The Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment (902-368-4683) has maps of fishing locations across the province and can provide tips for first-time anglers looking for direction. Information can also be found online at www.gov.pe.ca/fae and at Access PEI centres.

As part of National Fishing Week contest, veteran anglers who introduce a friend or family member to fishing this summer are eligible for numerous prizes including a boat, outboard motor, an electronic fish finder, spinning outfits and lure kits.
