The Honourable Jeffrey E. Lantz, Minister of Education, encourages all Islanders to reflect on the role teachers play in our lives on October 5 – World Teachers' Day.

"Through the dedication of our teachers, our Island society is enriched because teachers have a tremendous positive influence on our youth," said Minister Lantz. "In addition to providing students with necessary skills and education, they also serve as role models, supporters and community leaders."

Six years ago, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated October 5 as World Teachers' Day at the 44th Session of the International Conference on Education in Geneva. The date coincides with the anniversary of the adoption in 1966 of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. In adopting the UNESCO recommendation, governments around the world unanimously recognized the need and importance for every society to have competent, qualified and motivated teachers.

"Our Island teachers provide students with a high quality education," said Minister Lantz. "They provide this education during a time of rapid technological advances and are to be commended for their dedication and hard work."
