Hon. Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology today released figures of 2005 Team PEI Trade Missions and says the numbers show Island companies are generating jobs and opportunities.

Thirty-eight Island companies took part in trade missions to Chile, China, Boston, Chicago, Calgary and Toronto in 2005 that have led to the creation of over 60 full-time jobs and over $7.5 million in increased sales.

“Island companies are talented, resourceful and innovative and, when we bring those talents together with individuals in markets throughout the world, we are seeing that Island companies are gaining access in those markets,” said Minister Currie. ”We are very pleased to see our companies grow and expand through these very important trade missions and we will continue to partner with Island businesses to create jobs and opportunities for our province.”

Minister Currie said plans for 2006 Trade Missions will include Barbados, Detroit, North Carolina, Florida, as well as return visits to Toronto and Chile. The Minister says he is confident that Island companies will continue to make great inroads

“The success of PEI companies participating in these missions is creating awareness to other Island companies who may be capable of exporting their products and services to destinations around the globe,” said Minister Currie. “PEI is also gaining a renowned reputation as PEI companies distribute products and services all over the world, including Japan, Latin America, Western Europe and North America.”
