Minister Currie Reports Strong Crowds for 7th Annual Studio Tour Weekend

Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology today reported the 7th Annual Studio Tour Weekend resulted in strong crowds and brisk sales for the Island art, craft and giftware industry.

“This weekend has grown into a must-see fall event for tourists and Islanders, and has become an integral part of the shoulder season for Island craftspeople,” said Minister Currie. “I continue to be very impressed with the quality of products and the creative Islanders that produce these world class items.”

Early reports indicate a strong attendance from out-of-province visitors, as well as overwhelming positive comments from the 51 exhibitors.

“I was very happy to visit some of the workshops and studios on the tour and see the amazing products being produced in Prince Edward Island,” said Joni Fagan of Conception Bay, Newfoundland. “You have a beautiful province with very talented individuals and I can’t wait to come back again for next year’s tour.”

Nancy Conn-Levin of Ocean, New Jersey, said she found the demonstrations to be very interesting and educational and indicated she found a few treasures to take home with her.

“The people are so friendly and we were blown away by the workmanship on display in every place we visited,” said Ms. Conn-Levin. “We have visited art studios and galleries in many places and Prince Edward Island artisans certainly don’t take a back seat to anyone. It was a fantastic experience!”

Minister Currie said the addition of the tax-free incentive for Island companies was very well received by artisans, craftspeople and shop owners. The Minister said it was an investment the department willingly made in support of the industry.

“We are always looking for new ways to ensure more people are enjoying Island craft, art and giftware and every effort is made to assist in the sales of Island products,” Minister Currie stated. “We will review the data received from both artisans and visitors, and use the suggestions to continue to grow and improve this annual weekend event.”

Plans are underway for next year’s Studio Tour Weekend, to be held the last weekend of September 2006.
