Islanders aged 15 to 21 are invited to take part in the annual Financial Fitness Challenge, which runs through to April 15, 2011, says Justice and Public Safety Minister Doug Currie.
“We want to make smart money management appealing to an increasingly web-savvy generation,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage Island youth to log on to the website, play the games and enter the contest. Someone on Prince Edward Island is going to win an Apple® IPad.”
The challenge is available online at FinancialFitnessChallenge.ca. The judges will randomly select one entry from each province and territory to win an Apple® Ipad, and one national grand prize winner will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
The website uses interactive tools and scenarios to raise awareness of important financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing and balancing needs versus wants. This year, visitors to the site will see four new entertaining and informative videos on budgeting, credit cards, investing and investment fraud.
The contest is sponsored by the Canadian Securities Administrators and administered locally through the Prince Edward Island Securities Office, Department of Justice and Public Safety.
Background:
The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) works to improve the financial literacy of youth. More than 60,000 youth across Canada participated in the challenge over the past four years.
The CSA, the council of securities regulators of Canada's provinces and territories, coordinates and harmonizes regulation for the Canadian capital markets. It’s mandate is to protect investors from unfair or fraudulent practices through regulation of the securities industry. Part of this protection is educating investors about the risk, responsibilities and rewards of investing.
The Prince Edward Island Securities Office works to protect Island investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices in the marketplace. More information: www.gov.pe.ca/securities.
