Congratulations to the Subway Sluggers Masters women’s softball team representing Prince Edward Island on the world stage later this month, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.

“I know all Islanders join me in wishing the Subway Sluggers the best of luck in the World Masters tournament in Turin, Italy,” said the minister. “The team is to be congratulated for their team work and dedication to the sport.”

The Subway Sluggers has 17 team members from across Prince Edward Island – from Mill River East to St. Peters Bay. The team members are women aged 42 to 68.

“This is the first time a team from Prince Edward Island has competed in the World Masters,” said coach Carol Mayne. “We’re proud to represent our Island and we will do our very best to be great ambassadors for Prince Edward Island and Canada both on and off the field.”

The World Masters tournament will be held August 2-11. The tournament will see teams comprised of athletes no younger than 35 years old from across the globe compete in a variety of sports. The tournament is held every four years, and approximately 60 softball team from all over the world will compete in this year’s competitions.

“The World Masters is a great example of how a love of sport can become a life-long passion,” said the minister. “I know the softball team will represent Prince Edward Island well on the world stage and I wish them all the best in their games.”
