Island athletes were recently recognized for their participation at the International Island Games in Rhodes, Greece.
More than 80 members of Team PEI participated at the NatWest Island Games XII, in Rhodes, Greece, from June 30 - July 6, 2007. Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour Minister Carolyn Bertram hosted a reception Wednesday to congratulate the members of Team PEI for their efforts, success and participation at the games.
“The athletes worked and trained hard to earn a place on Team PEI and to earn the honour of representing Prince Edward Island at the Island Games,” says Minister Bertram. “They should be proud of the hard work and dedication. All of our athletes performed exceptionally well and our team brought home 20 medals; what a tremendous success!”
About 3000 athletes competed in 14 sports, making the 2007 Games the largest ever NatWest Island Games.
Minister Bertram also took a moment to thank the coaches and managers, parents and caregivers who helped prepare the athletes for the competitions. “Thanks to the support and encouragement they received at home, the athletes were well prepared to compete against the best from throughout the world.”
The Island Games take place every two years. The next Island Games will be held in 2009 in Åland, an autonomous region of Finland. The PEI Island Games Association has submitted a formal intent to bid for the 2013 Games.
