The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, today announced 50 per cent increase in funding for the Museum Development Grants Program and a 25 per cent increase in core funding to Community Museums Association of PEI.
"I would like to commend the Community Museums Association of PEI for its hard work over the past number of year in providing training and guidance to the volunteer groups who run our more than 20 community museums," said Minister MacFadyen. "We are pleased to be able to provide these increases to what is considered to be an important contributor to the cultural, social and economic well-being of this province."
This funding is designed to support new initiatives for community museums, special exhibits and improved heritage resources. It will also give the predominantly volunteer board members more support in managing displays and other initiatives that will attract attention to the museum.
"This funding increase follows the release of the Cultural Policy for Prince Edward Island which was announced in the fall sitting of the legislature and sets out government's goals and principles with regard to culture," said Minister MacFadyen."
This announcement will see funding for the Museum Development Program increase to $30,000 annually, while funding to the community Museum Association will increase to $25,000.
