November 14, 2005 * Community and Cultural Affairs [to Jun 2007]On behalf of the Provincial Government, the Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs with responsibility for labour, today released the following statement to clarify government’s intent on the recently announced review of the Employment Standards Act: “As previously announced, a committee has been established to conduct a review of the PEI Employment Standards Act and in so doing, has been asked to take into consideration legislation currently in place in other provinces and report back to government. The aim of this review is to ensure the Employment Standards Act continues to meet the needs of workers in this province. Recent media reports have incorrectly stated government’s plans around a review of the Employment Standards Act. I would like to clarify that our government is not in favour of a two-tier minimum wage for Prince Edward Island. “Government’s commitment is to ensure the effectiveness of the Employment Standards Act and this review is intended to assist us in providing Islanders with sound employment legislation.” - 30 -Media Contact: Jennifer MacLeod
