Minister Bertram launches go!Winter Active 2011

Health and Wellness
As we enter into what are often the coldest months of the year, it is important to remember that we need to stay active. This month, go!PEI and the Department of Health and Wellness are pleased to launch go!Winter Active 2011, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.

“Throughout the winter months, there are many opportunities across our One Island Community to stay active, such as skiing, snowshoeing, skating, hiking or simply enjoying a winter walk,” said Minister Bertram. “By incorporating daily physical activity into our families lives, we are leading by example and teaching our children to make healthy choices.”

“go!PEI’s mission this winter is to keep Islanders moving,” said Program Coordinator Laura MacPherson. “Along with promoting the importance of staying active for the health of it, we want to remind Islanders of the many free winter activities available to them. This winter, we are encouraging everyone to get active, whether as an individual, a family or part of a school group.”

go!Winter Active 2011 runs from January 22 and March 1 and will include 18 go!PEI Skate Days, a go!PEI School Snow Challenge, and a go!Family Winter Active Challenge.

go!PEI Skate Days will run between January 22 and 30 at 18 arenas across the province. All skates will be free of charge, so grab some skates, call up a friend or bring the entire family to your local arena. There will be healthy snacks and prize giveaways. Participants are asked to bring a healthy non-perishable food product for donation to the local food bank. Details on Skate locations and times can be found at www.gopei.ca.

Island Students are also encouraged to participate in the go!PEI School Snow Challenge for a chance to win $250 towards recreation equipment for their school. Register between January 22 and March 1 by emailing ,a href="http://gopei@recreationpei.ca">gopei@recreationpei.ca and then get outside as a class, club or team and build your best snow creation. Photos of team creations must be submitted by

March 4.
