August 25, 2009 * Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]Prince Edward Island has won their first medal in the 2009 Canada Games; gold in the men’s hammerthrow. Twenty year old, Matthew Caseley, from French River PEI was awarded the gold medal on Tuesday evening, after a 56.55 metre throw. “I am delighted to congratulate Matthew on his Gold Medal achievement. This is a wonderful accomplishment for a young athlete and a wonderful way to kick off the second week of the Games,” said the Honourable Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. Matthew Caseley surpassed British Columbia’s Angus Taylor throw by .67 of metre. In 2008 Matthew placed second at Espoir in hammerthrow. He is also Prince Edward Island’s hammerthrow and weightthrow record holder. Athletics competitions will continue all week at the UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place in Charlottetown.
