Minister Bertram Congratulates Team PEI on a Successful Canada Games

Congratulations to Team PEI on their successful two weeks of competition at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.

"All Islanders are extremely proud of Team PEI and their tremendous efforts at the Canada Winter Games,” said Minister Bertram. “Our athletes have once again demonstrated great respect and sportsmanship during their competitions."

Team PEI 2011 was made up of 149 athletes/artists, 54 coaches, managers and support staff, and 13 Mission Staff, for a total delegation of 216. Team PEI was composed of 18 teams and competed in 15 sports.

"I would like to thank all of the Islanders whose support made it possible for our athletes to compete at this high level of competition," said Minister Bertram. "The achievements of Team PEI are a testament to the hard work and dedication of athletes, coaches, mission staff and parents in the development of the sport community across the province."

Team PEI's two gold medalists, Alyssa Chapman and Robert MacMillan, were flag bearers at this afternoon's closing ceremonies. PEI finished 9th overall and won 2 gold and 4 bronze medals. The breakdown of the medal count for Team PEI includes:

- Alyssa Chapman – Gold medal in Figure Skating Special Olympics Dance (solo)

- Devin Di Julio – Bronze medal in Judo

- Lorena Ellis – Bronze medal in Judo

- Robert MacMillan – Gold medal in Boxing

- Brandon Blacquiere – Bronze medal in Boxing

- Luke Holland – Bronze medal in Boxing

In addition, Team PEI had its best finish ever in women's hockey with a 6-1 win over Nova Scotia which was good for 7th place.
