February 15, 2002 * Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]Health and Social Services Minister Jamie Ballem expressed condolences today to the family of the late Nancy Lee, who worked for many years as Prince Edward Island's Director of Child Welfare. Minister Ballem advised that Ms. Lee made a tremendous contribution to Island children and to the development of the provincial child welfare system. "She is fondly remembered by many staff for her caring, compassion and tenacity," said Minister Ballem. "Throughout her career, Nancy maintained a primary focus on the needs and rights of children and worked tirelessly to address the critical issues faced by abused and neglected children and their families." Following many years of service as a senior social worker and director, Ms. Lee served as provincial Director of Child Welfare from 1984 to 1994. In October 2000, she received special recognition by her provincial colleagues at the Health and Social Services annual staff conference. In March 2001, she was recognized by her peers across Canada when she was awarded the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) Annual Distinguished Service Award.Media Contact: Jean Doherty
