Paralympians, such as Mark Arendz and Billy Bridges, are living examples of people who have triumphed over adversity. Health and Wellness Minister, Carolyn Bertram, applauds ParaSport and Recreation PEI for its ongoing commitment to furthering sport in Prince Edward Island and inspiring these athletes to prevail.

“Every ParaSport athlete has an inspirational story to tell,” said Minister Bertram. “ParaSport and Recreation PEI provides the guidance, encouragement and expertise to integrate sport and recreation into the lives of these individuals.”

Over the years, Prince Edward Island athletes with physical disability have achieved national and international recognition in sport. Recreation participation is enhanced and developed through a variety of local programs and provincial events.

“ParaSport and Recreation PEI provides recreation and sport opportunities for individuals with a physical disability on Prince Edward Island,” said Tracy Stevenson, Executive Director for ParaSport and Recreation PEI. “Having a disability can create a stereotype that participation in sport is not possible – but this is far from the truth. We are here to support these athletes and challenge them to be the best they can be.”

ParaSport and Recreation PEI (formerly Paralympics PEI Inc.) is a non-profit, charitable organization that was established in 1974. It offers a variety of programs and services throughout the province, including: Bridging the Gap “Getting Physically Active,” Wheelchair Basketball Program, Sledge Hockey Program, Aqua-Abilities, Equipment Loan Program, and Moving To Inclusion Training.

“Our Government is proud to be able to support ParaSport and Recreation PEI through our annual grant program,” said Minister Bertram. “I commend the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers who work with this organization. They do a tremendous job and I thank them for their dedication.”
