The PEI Home and School Federation should be commended for their great work helping parents contribute positively to their child’s academic experience, said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.
“Parents play an important role in their child’s learning and in our provincial education system,” said Minister Currie. “The PEI Home and School Federation has done an outstanding job making parents more aware of ways they can contribute to their child’s learning in a helpful, positive way.”
Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie applauded the successful work of the PEI Home and School Federation in the Legislature this week. He welcomed Owen Parkhouse who was elected president at the recent Annual General Meeting and acknowledged the tremendous contribution of outgoing president Bill Whelan.
Minister Currie thanked Whelan and the PEI Home and School Federation for their successful work in:
• encouraging parent engagement;
• providing helpful ways for parents to be active in their child’s learning;
• informing parents about major issues that affect the health and safety of their children, such as substance abuse and cyber-bullying; and
• supporting the education system by joining department committees.
“Parents add tremendous value to the educational discussion,” said Currie. “My intention is to increase the discussion, make sure it is focussed on learning and students, and ensure the voice of parents is strong and clear.”
The PEI Home and School Federation and La fèderation des parents, recognized as the voice of parents in this province, are organizations of parents and teachers working together to ensure the best possible education for children and youth. Minister Currie addressed members of the PEI Home and School Federation during their Annual General Meeting in Charlottetown last weekend.
