In recognition of International Adult Learners’ Week, Hon. Allan Campbell, minister responsible for post-secondary education, acknowledged the accomplishments of the many Islanders who have enrolled in adult learning programs across the province.
“Every year, hundreds of adult learners return to the classroom to complete their GED or enroll in post-secondary programs,” said Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “It takes courage to return to the classroom and I applaud all those who have taken steps to improve their literacy skills.”
The number of workplace learning centres is also increasing as Prince Edward Island employers become more involved in initiatives to upgrade employee essential skills.
Workplace Learning PEI, a non-profit partnership between business, labour and government, has been instrumental in developing on-site learning centres in PEI businesses. The organization has been operating since 1997 to provide adult Islanders with opportunities to acquire literacy and essential skills training in the workplace. Workplace Learning PEI Inc. was recently awarded the Canadian Council on Learning’s Share the Flame Award which recognizes innovative approaches in learning.
“I am pleased to see Workplace Learning PEI honoured with this award,” said Minister Campbell. “In today’s knowledge-based economy, Workplace Learning PEI provides a valuable service to Island employers by helping them improve the essential skills of their employees.”
“This group’s excellent work within the province is part of an important national and international effort,” said Doug Ellis, chair of Workplace Learning PEI. “The success of the organization is due to the commitment of staff members who are recognized nationally for their expertise in the field of workplace learning.”
“Increasing literacy and essential skills in the province will ensure a brighter future for all Islanders,” said Minister Campbell. “Government is working to ensure all Islanders have access to the training and skills development they need to get a job in today’s economy. We are excited to build partnerships with groups like Workplace Learning PEI to meet our goals.”
