Prince Edward Island Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair today announced details of the 12th International Conference on Shellfish Restoration which is being held in the province from September 16 to 18. The conference is being hosted by the Prince Edward Island Shellfish Association and co-sponsored by the provincial department and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. It is expected to attract upwards of 150 delegates.
“Prince Edward Island is an ideal venue for this prestigious international conference because of the experience and expertise of our shellfish industry,” said Minister LeClair. “We look forward to exchanging information and ideas with leading shellfish experts from around the world.”
The opening keynote speaker for the conference is Rowan Jacobsen of Vermont, who is internationally recognized in the oyster industry. He is the author of A Geography of Oysters: The Connoisseur’s Guide to Oyster Eating in North America. His latest book, being published this month, deals with estuaries and their potential role in improving the health of oceans.
The conference begins with a tour of a number of shellfish sites and facilities on September 15. During the following two days, international experts will lead discussions on topics including oyster enhancement strategies, clams and other shellfish species, water quality, pests, predators and diseases and food safety.
The conference coincides with the Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival which takes place in Charlottetown from September 18 to 20.
“Not only will delegates be able to discuss issues related to maintaining and enhancing shellfish production around the world, they will also be able to experience and enjoy the high quality of Prince Edward Island shellfish products in a festive atmosphere,” said Minister LeClair. “I am looking forward to this opportunity to showcase the excellence of our shellfish industry.”
