Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair today announced that a rural youth conference will be held at the Emerald Community Centre on April 22. The Rural Youth Conference is an initiative of the provincial government’s Rural Action Plan released in January.
“This conference will focus on economic development and the needs and ideas of young people in rural Prince Edward Island as well as develop a framework for policies and services that will enhance opportunities for them,” said Minister LeClair. “It is especially important to involve young people because they represent the future of our rural communities.”
A steering committee including representatives of organizations and groups such as Young Farmers, Future Fishers, 4-H, the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College is helping to organize the conference. It is expected to involve some 75 young people between the ages of 16 to 29. Representatives from several provincial and federal government departments, along with community leaders, will also be invited.
The conference will consist of a full day of activities including presentations, discussion groups and networking opportunities.
“We need to create attractive employment and educational opportunities if Prince Edward Island hopes to have the labour force which is key to generating economic renewal and prosperity,” said Minister LeClair.
Further details of the conference will be announced as they are finalized. Those interested in attending can e-mail Kaley MacDonald at kemacdonald@gov.pe.ca.
