Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Tourism, today announced the membership of the Steering Committee that will guide the study into Marketing Mechanisms in the PEI fishery.

The fishermen who will collaborate with Eugene Niles, appointed earlier this year to Chair the Steering Committee, are Kennie Drake - Morell; Robert H. P. Jenkins - Little Pond; Donnie Strongman - Poplar Grove; and Wilbur Banks - Murray Road.

Mr. MacAdam said, "I am pleased that these individuals, who represent all lobster fishing areas of the Province, have offered to participate. They have been very active in the fishery and I am confident that they will represent their fellow fishermen well in taking on this task."

Mr. MacAdam stated that funding was approved in principle to implement a study to review marketing mechanisms in the lobster industry, with a view to ensuring that the best mechanisms are in place to provide fishers with consistently strong, long term returns from the marketplace.

"As it is essential to have feed-back at the grass roots level, the study will solicit input from fishers and other industry members as it proceeds," said the Minister.

The Minister indicated the Steering Committee will meet to develop terms of reference. A call for proposals for the study would then be issued shortly thereafter.

"The issue of marketing mechanisms for lobster, our most valuable species, is an extremely important topic and I look forward to receiving the results of this study," said Minister MacAdam.
