Minister Announces Funding for the Acadian Games

Health and Wellness
Young Acadians from across Atlantic Canada come together each year to compete in the Acadian Games and celebrate their unique culture. The government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to contribute $34,000 to our regional Acadian Games committee to assist in their training and preparations for the 2011 Games, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.

“The Games are an important way for the francophone community to come together and celebrate their language, heritage and culture, while promoting healthy lifestyle activities,” said Minister Bertram. “I want to congratulate these tremendous athletes, coaches and managers for their hard work and dedication. They represented our province and their community incredibly well and we are proud of their accomplishments.”

Over 1,200 athletes and several thousand spectators took in the Games this summer in Saint John, New Brunswick. The athletes ranged in age from 11 to 16 years of age. Team PEI was made up of 100 athletes and competed in volleyball, softball, tennis, badminton, soccer, mini-handball, and track & field events – bringing home four medals, one silver and three bronze.

“As we enter a new school year, I want to encourage all of our young people across the province to get involved in physical activities. Being active is good for you in so many ways. It can provide a huge range of fun experiences, make you feel good and improve your health,” said Minister Bertram.

The 2011 Acadian Games will be held in Edmundston, New Brunswick. For more information on the Prince Edward Island Regional Acadian Games Committee, contact the Provincial Coordinator for the Acadian Games, Jeannette Gallant, at jeuxacadie@gov.pe.ca.
