The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Sport recently announced additional funding to assist with preparations for the 2005 Canada Summer Games.
"The amount of funding will increase from $64,300 to roughly $100,000 per year," says Minister MacFadyen. "I am confident that this additional funding will further assist our athletes and officials in getting ready for Canada Games competitions and ensuring that PEI teams are well prepared."
This funding falls in line with the PEI Government's commitment to sport through the PEI Sport Strategy. In the budget, government announced $475,000 for the implementation of this strategy, the largest single infusion ever into the sport and recreation sector in Prince Edward Island. Part of this commitment was for additional funds to support athlete development for provincial and Canada Games.
Currently, teams are in the process of training for the 2005 Canada Summer Games to be held in Regina, Saskatchewan in August 2005.
"Our teams continue to excel in provincial, national and international competitions and, through this additional funding, we can provide increased opportunities for athletes and officials to prepare for and meet the challenges of Canada Games competition, " says Minister MacFadyen.
