It is possible that Prince Edward Island will experience severe weather over the coming weekend as a result of Hurricane Earl and Public Safety Minister Currie is advising Islanders to take precautions.
Earlier this morning, Hon. Doug Currie, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Deputy Minister Shauna Sullivan Curley visited the provincial Office of Public Safety at the Joint Emergency Operations Centre for a briefing on the storm and its potential impacts on Prince Edward Island.
“Hurricanes and tropical storms are violent storms which can change direction at short notice,” says Minister Currie. “This system can carry high winds, heavy rain, storm surge and flooding and can cause widespread destruction. Islanders are encouraged to pay attention to weather forecasts and consider how this may affect weekend plans.
“Everyone could begin by filling up the car with gas, ensuring there is propane for the BBQ or a camp stove, and having some cash on hand. Begin securing any items on your property that could become a projectile in high winds.”
The Office of Public Safety will be closely monitoring events this weekend and will be working with the media to issue public information as necessary. Public Safety Officers have been in contact with government departments, municipalities, fire departments, and public and private campgrounds to ensure emergency plans are in place in the event that the storm impacts the province.
Islanders and visitors are encouraged to monitor local media and pay careful attention to Canadian Hurricane Centre updates regarding heavy rains and high winds which could impact the province. More information is available from Environment Canada at www.ec.gc.ca/ouragans-hurricanes.
