Executive Council has approved a recommendation by the Employment Standards Board that an increase to the minimum wage be implemented in two stages.
Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister responsible for labour announced today that, effective May 1, 2008, the minimum wage in Prince Edward Island will increase from $7.50 to $7.75 , and will rise again on October 1, 2008 to $8.00.
“We recognize that changes to minimum wage levels have a direct impact on employees in some industries, particularly younger people, and those who rely on seasonal employment,” said Minister Bertram. “We want to continue to work with Islanders to improve these standards.
“At the same time, we acknowledge that employers will be required to incorporate this increase into their payroll budget on May 1. By choosing to implement the increase in two stages, we are providing the business community more time to integrate the salary adjustments into their operational plans.”
The Employment Standards Board meets at least once a year to review the Minimum Wage Order and make recommendations to government. The Board is made up of representatives of employers and employees, with a neutral chairperson.
