The Department of Transportation and Public Works today announced that the scheduled detour required to complete the Midgell Bridge replacement will begin on Tuesday, September 5.
As part of the project to replace the Midgell Bridge, a planned traffic disruption of approximately two weeks is required to allow for the new bridge structure to be moved from its temporary location adjacent to the old bridge structure which has been removed to make way for the new bridge structure.
“Recognizing the importance of Route 2, our staff and contractors have worked to minimize traffic disruptions as much as possible,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. “We have planned the work at Midgell so that what would normally require a traffic disruption of several months for a project of this scale will instead be for only about two weeks, work schedule and weather permitting.”
The traffic detour route for the Midgell Bridge during this two-week period will involve:
• Travelling east from Morell on Route 2 (Veterans Memorial Highway), take a right turn onto Route 331.
• Follow Route 331 to Route 313, then take a left turn following Route 313 into St. Peters.
Shea noted that the public has several ways to stay informed about traffic conditions. These include media notices in print and on radio, as well as web-based tools such as online traffic advisories and project updates by email. The online traffic advisories can be accessed through the Department of Transportation and Public Works website at www.gov.pe.ca/tpwpei.The public can register for project updates by email by contacting traffic@gov.pe.ca.
“The public has been very cooperative throughout the construction period and we appreciate their continued support as we take the final steps to complete this project,” said Shea.
