April 6, 2010 * Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]It’s an honour to have Island native Mark Arendz present one of his Paralympic bibs that he competed in at the recent Vancouver Games to our provincial ski and nordic centre says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Vessey. “Mark is an outstanding athlete and this kind gesture clearly demonstrates how much he values his home province,” said Minister Vessey. “It will be proudly displayed at the Park in honour of Mark Arendz and all of the hard work that has gone into becoming a Paralympic competitor. He is a role model for young Island athletes and we are proud to have him represented here at our Park site.” Arendz competed in various Nordic events, finishing 7th overall in the Men’s 3km Pursuit – Standing; 16th in the Men’s Biathlon 12.5km Pursuit - Standing; 12th in the Men’s Cross-country 10km - Standing; seventh in the Men’s Relay 1x4km + 2x5km; and 9th in the qualifiers for the Men’s Cross-country 1km Sprint - Standing. “I wanted to give the bib back to the Brookvale Ski Club and the Brookvale Nordic Centre along with its staff,” said Arendz. “Brookvale was where it all began for me and I want them to have a piece of where it has taken me. As I grew up at the Nordic Centre, I saw pictures of the 1991 Canada Games and as a young teenager met members of the 2003 Canada Games Team. This inspired me to continue with the sport and I hope that this bib will inspire the next generation.”Media Contact: Julie Whitlock
