June 7, 2006 * Agriculture, Fisheries & Aquaculture [to Jun 2007]“Many hands make light work,” is an old adage that made the chore of spring-cleaning at the Macphail Homestead full of good cheer and community spirit. Volunteer members, 4-H youth and neighbours came together to prepare the historic Homestead for the season. More than 25 people helped to take down the storm windows, wipe down the furniture, prepare the kitchen for painting and weed the garden beds. The board members thanked the volunteers by providing them with a free homemade lunch. After recently being designated as one of Prince Edward Island’s Heritage Sites, the board has rejuvenated its activities to ensure that Macphail Homestead remains an active and vibrant part of the Orwell community. A variety of workshops will be held throughout the summer on Thursdays and an activity for the public is planned every Saturday throughout the summer. The tearoom will be open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and on Wednesdays and Sundays for dinner. True to its heritage, the tearoom will feature locally grown produce prepared in a simple, homestyle fashion. The Macphail Homestead will officially be open on June 28.
