For The Love Of Books: Library Week 1998 Theme

* Education [to Apr 2008]
Public libraries across the Island are gearing up for Library Week, May 24-30, 1998. The annual event celebrates the role that libraries play in the provision of information, reading and listening materials to Islanders of all ages. The theme this year is For the Love of Books, emphasizing the natural connection between libraries and the love of reading.

"Reading should be encouraged in all Island homes as an educational and enjoyable experience," says the Honourable Chester Gillan, Minister of Education. "The ability to read is the first step in the life-long learning process."

Public libraries across the province will be hosting a wide variety of events including open houses, story times for children, family Internet cafes and much more. Patrons who borrow books from the public libraries during Library Week will have their name entered to win an Island-made book bag. Each library will be giving away one book bag.

Admission to all events is free and everyone is welcome. More information on specific activities can be obtained by contacting your community library.

During Library Week, the Provincial Library will be presenting certificates of recognition to numerous library volunteers across the province, in appreciation of their dedicated service. Volunteers provide assistance in areas such as shelf tidying, special project fundraising and organizing summer reading programs.

The new Automated Library Management System is in its first year of operation. Islanders who have not registered for a new library card are invited to drop in to register at any community library. The new library cards are valid at any of the 23 Island libraries.
