Looking for Prince Edward Island's Biggest Pumpkin

* Agriculture and Forestry [to May 2015]
The 14th annual competition for the biggest pumpkin on Prince Edward Island will be held this Saturday at the Silver Bells Christmas Tree Farm in Springvale. The competition is sponsored by the Prince Edward Island Giant Pumpkin Growers Association.

Gordon Aten, a spokesperson for the association, said a total of 30 pumpkins were entered into the competition last year, and he is expecting as many or more this year.

“The event generates a great deal of intense competition,” said Aten. “It will be interesting to see if any records are broken this year.”

Last year’s competition was won by William Van Schuppen from the Union Road near Montague. His entry weighed in at 1091 and a half pounds. Aten said that two other pumpkins also exceeded 1000 pounds.

Pumpkins should be on site at 10 a.m. The weigh-off will take place at noon.

In addition to the pumpkin competition, there will be hayrides, children’s activities and a canteen. Admission is free.

Springvale is west of Charlottetown on Route 2.
