The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) recently announced that Dr. Peter MacKean of Kensington has assumed the office of CFPC President.
Dr. MacKean was first elected to the CFPC's National Executive Committee in 1997. He has served as Member-at-Large, Honorary Treasurer, Chair of the Board and President-Elect prior to his assuming the Presidency. This is the first time a PEI doctor has become President of the CFPC.
The CFPC was founded in 1954. The organization was formed in that year because, at the time, there was a lot of new medical knowledge and no formal way for physicians to keep abreast of the latest medical information. The CFPC now offers full family medicine residency programs at all 16 medical schools in Canada. The organization strives to ensure physicians have good opportunity for continuing education.
As President, Dr. MacKean becomes the official spokesperson for the organization and will represent the College at a significant number of national and international meetings during the next year. Whenever Dr. MacKean is out of province, Dr. Helga Reisch provides locum or temporary coverage of his practice.
Dr. MacKean is a well known family physician in the Kensington and East Prince area. He has had a family practice for the past 20 years and is also Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Prince County Hospital.
