Local Events Celebrate Library Month

* Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]
October is Library Month and provincial libraries are offering special activities to complement this year’s theme, Libraries: the world at your fingertips.

“I invite Islanders to spend some time this month at a local provincial library and get involved in the many activities,” says Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Culture and Labour. “At a local library, Islanders can access a wide range of programs and services to learn, discover and connect with one another in our communities. Our libraries really do provide the world at your fingertips.”

Prince Edward Island has 26 provincial libraries, which offer a variety of services to support literacy, promote history and culture, provide access to information and offer expertise to assist everyone, regardless of age or language. Programs include knitting clubs, Island Nature Trust Lecture Series, pre-school story hour, Christmas decorating and much more.

One of the current highlights is a year-long Speakers Tour, which local libraries are hosting in partnership with the Anne 2008 Celebrations. The year 2008 marks the 100th Anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables, and local speakers are offering lectures on issues reflecting Island culture at the turn of the 20th Century. The first series of tours is underway now.
