Public libraries across the province are gearing up for Library Week, March 2-8, 1997. The annual event celebrates the role that libraries play in the provision of information, reading and listening materials to Islanders of all ages. The theme this year is For the Love of Books/Pour l'amour des livres.
Twenty-four public libraries serve the Island population. Membership is free and the collection contains over 250,000 books, CD's and other materials. Most items circulate for a three week loan.
A wide range of events are planned in celebration of the week including:
Alberton Public Library: Open House for the Internet on Friday, March 7.
Bibliothèque publique d'Abram-Village: presentation on menopause by a public health nurse (in French) on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 pm.
Rotary Regional Library: Internet for retirees, Wednesday, March 5 at 10 am.
Tignish Public Library: Seniors' Tea and Bingo on Wednesday, March 5.
Georgetown Public Library: Home decorating with Island Heritage Home, Thursday, March 6 at 7 pm.
Mount Stewart Public Library: The Hillsborough River, a Heritage River, a presentation by Maurice Fitzpatrick, Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 pm.
Murray Harbour Public Library: exhibition of old-time school memorabilia displayed throughout the week.
Cornwall Public Library: Birdwatching and feeding by Jackie Waddell from the Island Nature Trust, Tuesday, March 11 at 7:30 pm.
Montague Public Library: the mobile unit of the Health Information Resource Centre will be on hand to answer health questions during library hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Morell Public Library: Decorating with paint and wallpaper, Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 pm. Storytime and puppet-making on Saturday, March 8 at 2 pm.
Bibliothèque Dr. J.-Edmond Arsenault, Charlottetown: Crafts for adults, (in French) Saturday, March 8 at 2 pm.
Admission to all events is free and everyone is welcome. Members of the public should check at their local public library for other events.
As well, the PEI Professional Librarians' Association is hosting an Internet Cafe on Friday, March 7 at Holland College's West Royalty computer centre and on Saturday, March 8 from 2 to 5 pm at the Media Centre in the Confederation Centre Public Library.
