Library Events Will Celebrate Anne of Green Gables' 100th Birthday

* Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour [to Jan 2010]
Islanders will have the opportunity this fall to find out what life was like during the turn of the last century and begin early celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the publication of L.M. Montgomery’s first and most famous novel, Anne of Green Gables. The Provincial Library Service is partnering with the Anne 2008 Centennial Committee to host a year-long Speakers Tour across the Island.

The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 11, at the Cornwall Public Library. Carolyn Collins, author of the Anne of Green Gables Treasury, will speak about everyday life in Prince Edward Island in the Victorian days. Written during the late nineteenth century, Anne of Green Gables shows the fascinating and sometimes contradictory social period of Queen Victoria. The story reflects life on rural Prince Edward Island that same period.

Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour says the public lectures and workshops on Anne-related themes are a great opportunity for Islanders to celebrate 100 years of Anne and to learn more about our province during the Victorian age. “Anne of Green Gables has captured the imagination of people world-wide for nearly 100 years,” said Minister Bertram. “I want to thank the Anne 2008 committee for working with our Provincial Library Service to provide this fascinating speakers tour. I want to encourage Islanders to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

Another 23 lectures and/or workshops are planned for 2008. The Provincial Library Service Winter/Spring Program Guide will provide a complete list in January.
