Islanders with an interest in caring for people with advanced illness will have a chance to meet with one of Canada's leading palliative care advisors later this week.
Dr. Frank Ferris, a nationally recognized authority on palliative care, will be guest speaker at a public forum on the topic, Who Cares? Caring for the Dying Person at Home, the Family Experience. It will be held Wednesday October 29, 1997 at 7:30 p.m. at the Colonel Gray High School Lecture Theatre in Charlottetown.
The forum will be of interest to family members, health practitioners, and volunteers who have been involved in caring for the terminally ill, or may have to in future.
Dr. Ferris will address issues involved in caring for the dying person such as lessening suffering through pain and symptom management, and providing ways to optimize remaining quality of life.
The forum will provide participants with the opportunity to hear more about palliative care, and ask questions of Dr. Ferris, other health professionals and community care providers.
It is sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Services, Island Hospice Association, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Seaman's Beverages. For more information on the forum, contact Health and Social Services at 368 6720 or 368 6130.
