Labour Day Message

* Provincial Affairs [to Oct 1996]
"This is my first opportunity and privilege as Minister Responsible for Labour matters to issue a Labour Day message. On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, I wish to take this opportunity to recognize the valuable contribution working people make toward improving the lives of all Islanders. It is an occasion for us to remember the importance and dignity of work and to restate our commitment to enforce fairness in the workplace.

Both employers and workers share a common interest in maintaining a strong workforce, one where Prince Edward Island will continue to record above average economic growth. In this way we are building a secure future for our children. As a government, we have a special responsibility toward workers in facilitating a productive labour management environment and assisting them in making their transition to the changing workplace and the new global economy. This labour management cooperation is exemplified by the successful labour management relationship evident at the fixed link project.

Government has continued to improve the benefits available under the Employment Standards Act. On September 1, 1996, the minimum wage will increase from $4.75 to $5.15, with a further increase on September 1, 1997, to $5.40. These increases recognize the contributions made by workers in the lower income groups.

Labour Day marks the last holiday of the summer. As we prepare to celebrate, I encourage all Prince Edward Islanders to take a few moments to reflect upon the accomplishments of working people, to consider the common interest we share and how we all can continue to work together for the betterment of our Island.

Enjoy your Labour Day weekend."
