Kings County Regional Landfill Will Close October 1

* Fisheries and Environment [to Jul 1998]
Honourable Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Environment confirmed today that the Kings County Regional Landfill Site at Cardigan will be closed effective October 1, 1997.

"We are honoring the commitment made to the residents of the Cardigan area in closing this site as previously announced." Prior to the closure the Minister is encouraging residents in the region to take advantage of a special offer. "All residents are urged to use this site for general property cleanup, free of tippage fees, on Saturday, September 27; Monday, September 29; and Tuesday, September 30, 1997." Tippage fees will remain for all commercial and institutional refuse and for all commercial haulers during this period.

Beginning on October 1, 1997, former users of the Kings County site will have to transport their waste to other provincial government owned facilities in the region. Commercial haulers will be required to transport their waste to the Energy From Waste Plant in Charlottetown.

"The Prince Edward Island Waste Management Commission will be expanding the Waste Watch program into the Kings County region in early 1998," Mr. MacAdam added. "A comprehensive education program for residents of the area will precede implementation of the program."
