Kindergarten registration underway for next year

* Education and Early Childhood Development [to May 2015]
Parents of children turning five by December 31, 2011, are reminded to contact their local elementary school to register for kindergarten, said Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, Doug Currie.

“The introduction of kindergarten to the school system has been a positive experience and is providing children and families with a full-day kindergarten program with more access to school resources and supports,” said Minister Currie. “As the first year of public kindergarten continues, it is now time for Islanders to begin looking forward to next year. It is very important to register your child this week to ensure school boards have an accurate picture on the number of new students for the 2011-2012 school year.”

Children turning five by December 31, 2011, start kindergarten in September 2011. You may register your child by visiting your local elementary school during the week of Monday, November 15, to Friday, November 19. Students of Elm Street School can register at the Western School Board office in Summerside. If parents of students in the Eastern School District are not able to visit a school this week, they can call their local elementary school and register over the phone. It is not necessary to bring your child with you; however, you will be required to provide the school with the child’s birth certificate and proof of permanent address.

Registration will continue at school board offices; however, parents are encouraged to register their child as soon as possible.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island continues to invest in early learning as part of its Preschool Excellence Initiative which is the largest investment in the educational system in the modern history of our province,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage all parents to register eligible kindergarten students this week to ensure the school boards are able to prepare for the upcoming year.”

Families will be invited to participate in Welcome to Kindergarten™ workshops in the spring of 2011 to meet their kindergarten teacher, school principal and other school staff.
