The Community Development Division of the Department of Development officially unveiled plans to redevelop the Kensington Railway Station at a news conference today. Ministers Don MacKinnon and Mitch Murphy were on hand to announce the details of the project. The new development will include a retail liquor outlet and commercial/retail space all within the Railway Station site.
The Kensington Railway Station area has been the focus of several stages of development over the past several years. The distinctive stone station was built in 1904 to replace an earlier frame structure. The historical aspect of the train station has made it a focal point for redevelopment in the community. The site presently houses the local library, tourism information centre, blacksmith shop, train and caboose, and gazebo.
"This project is intended to facilitate economic growth in the community through entrepreneurship and tourism," said Minister MacKinnon. "Our department is committed to working with communities throughout Prince Edward Island by helping to provide the infrastructure needed for sustainable economic activity."
"This project is consistent with the goal of Kensington's Strategic Plan to enhance and promote Kensington as a regional centre and a good place to live and work," said Minister Murphy. "This site is an excellent location for this type of redevelopment. The town is strategically located for a tourist destination and provides an entry point to various centres in western PEI, as well as the national park."
An official request for proposals was issued on Wednesday, October 14, 1998. The deadline for applications is Monday, October 26.
