Islanders are encouraged to participate in National Aboriginal Day celebrations taking place on Thursday, June 21, says Premier Robert Ghiz, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs.
“National Aboriginal Day provides an opportunity to experience the rich culture of Aboriginal Peoples here in Prince Edward Island and across Canada,” said Premier Ghiz. “Celebrations are taking place in both Island cities that will showcase some of the many talents and traditions of Aboriginal People.”
National Aboriginal Day acknowledges the unique achievements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit in agriculture, environment, business and the arts. June 21 was selected as National Aboriginal Day because it is the longest day of the year – the summer solstice. Aboriginal peoples have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day for many generations. It was officially proclaimed National Aboriginal Day by the Governor General in 1996.
Native Council of Prince Edward Island invites all Islanders to the 10th Annual Moccasin Walk and Aboriginal Celebrations taking place on Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Confederation Landing in Charlottetown. The morning will begin with a Moccasin Walk followed by drumming, dancing and the Indian Summer Games.
The Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island will celebrate National Aboriginal Day at the Lefurgey Cultural Centre in Summerside between noon and 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
“On behalf of the Province, I would like to wish the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I. and the Native Council of P.E.I. great success in their National Aboriginal Day celebrations,” said Premier Ghiz.
