Islanders Succeed at Maritime Fall Fair Beef Show

* Agriculture and Forestry [to May 2015]
Sunshine and brilliant autumn colors set the stage for the Maritime Fall Fair in Halifax where Val Townsend, an Angus breeder from Silvenlake, Alberta capably judged the well groomed cattle in the various beef breed classes. She stressed the need for cattle “to be able to travel on good feet and legs and have good mobility to get to the feed box, or around the pasture, as after all they’re sold by the pound.”

For the Supreme Champion of the Show she selected a Red Aberdeen Angus cow, Red Esk of Bannockburn 8N, with her twin male and female calves at side, owned by Bannockburn Valley Farm of Clyde River. The bull calf of the pair, Red Combo of Bannockburn 1U, she named Grand Champion and Supreme Male -- altogether a notable package.

A new all breeds Cinderella Classic Beef jackpot class added interest and color to the show as exhibitors paid a $100 fee to enter their animal, with the winners sharing a 30-20-10 percent top prize and the other entries splitting the remaining 40 percent equally. Prizes were also awarded for the best dressed show person and exhibit, all making for a classy display and a successful initiative.

Judges for the inaugural Cinderella Classic were Brian and Dora MacKinley of Cornwall, Prince Edward Island.

Included in the top six winners in the Classic were fifth placing Worth A Bit Annie K 5U for Eric & Tim Dixon, Tryon, and taking sixth spot was Wheatley River Ulyssa 6U for Glen & Ronnie Ford, Winsloe.
